Frequently Asked Questions

How much laminate flooring do I need?

Measure your room length × width in feet to get square footage. Add 15% for the staggered-row pattern that laminate requires (end joints must be offset by at least 12 in). Divide the total by the square footage on the box, then round up to the nearest full box.

Why does laminate need more waste than tile?

Laminate is installed in rows with staggered end joints for structural stability. Starting planks for each row are cut from the end of the previous row, generating waste. The 15% standard accounts for this and for edge cuts along walls.

What is the minimum gap required at walls for laminate?

Most laminate manufacturers specify a 1/4 in (6 mm) expansion gap at all walls, doorways, and fixed obstacles. This gap is hidden by baseboard or quarter-round moulding. Do not fill it with grout or caulk — laminate must float freely.

Can I install laminate over tile?

Often yes, if the existing tile is firmly adhered, level to within 3/16 in per 10 ft, and no individual tiles are cracked or loose. Verify with your laminate manufacturer's installation guide — some products have height restrictions that may affect door clearance.

How many planks are in a box of laminate flooring?

It depends on plank dimensions and the manufacturer. Common boxes contain 6–20 planks covering 15–25 sq ft. The box always lists the total square footage — use that number, not the plank count, for this calculator.
