How It Works

room_area = length × width
area_with_waste = room_area × (1 + waste_pct / 100)
boxes = ⌈ area_with_waste / box_coverage ⌉

Box coverage (sq ft per box) is printed on the product label. Always round up — you cannot buy a partial box.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate square footage for flooring?

Multiply the room length (in feet) by the room width (in feet). For example, a 10 ft × 14 ft room is 140 sq ft. For L-shaped rooms, break the space into two rectangles, calculate each, and add the totals.

How much flooring should I buy extra for waste?

Add 10% for straight installations, 15% for staggered-row products like laminate and vinyl plank, and 15–20% for diagonal patterns. Always round up to the nearest full box.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide your total square footage (including waste) by the square footage listed on the box. Round up to the nearest whole box. Example: 154 sq ft ÷ 20 sq ft per box = 7.7 → buy 8 boxes.

Does this calculator work for all flooring types?

Yes — the square footage formula is the same for tile, laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood, and carpet. The only variable is the box coverage, which you enter manually from the product label.

Should I include closets and under-appliances in my measurement?

Include closets if they will receive the same flooring. Include areas under appliances that are moved during installation (refrigerators, freestanding ranges). Exclude areas under built-in cabinets, islands, and fixed appliances.
